The Fringe Report (spoiler city)

peter and olivia

As the title of this post makes perfectly plain – but I’ll repeat the warning in case you somehow missed it – this post is being written with zero regard for how much of this series you have or haven’t seen.  So – SPOILER ALERT – for you weirdos that hate having plot points and story details given away.  Me?  I had to read about every single episode before I could handle continuing on with the series after season two.  It was (and continued to) make me very anxious.

So why did I keep watching?

BECAUSE IT IS FUCKING AWESOME.

Also, all my Fringe-loving friends kept demanding that I stick it out to the bitter end.  They PROMISED me it would all turn out okay.  Yes, it did.  With a lot of collateral damage.  I just finished watching the whole series today.  I stayed up late every single night this week and last night I watched until almost 3am, at which point I fell asleep in my chair until 4:30am.  Then I woke up and continued watching it because I couldn’t possibly concentrate on anything else until I knew every single thing that happened.  Needless to say, I’m a little burnt to the socket.  Now, I wish to say all the things I was thinking and feeling about this series:

  • First and foremost – the writers of this show may have given Peter and Olivia a happy ending but I think no fictional couple has gone through so much pain and separation and torture than they put these two through and I’m still pissed at them.
  • I love Peter and Olivia but if you ask me who my favorite characters are I’m incapable of pinpointing any one or even two.  It depends on the moment but Astrid is right up there.  At moments she was my very favorite.  Her relationship with Walter is so sweet and funny.  I relate to Astrid because she’s this quiet force holding all the others together.  She does practical things like care for Walter, she locates information, she makes sure all the instruments are clean, she’s dependable, she’s smart, and she’s fucking cute as hell.
  • My only problem with Astrid, played by Jasika Nicole was her hair in the first two seasons.  Why?  Am I a horrible bastardette who doesn’t like curly hair?  No.  I do not like helmet hair.  Any hair cut that makes someone look like they’re wearing a helmet bothers me.  In season 3 they cut it so you could see her ear lobes and that was much nicer and suited her better.  If you look at the image of her in her IMBD listing you’ll see her rocking her curls adorably.
  • Yeah, I get hung up on things like hair styles.  I guess what I really am is a shallow bastardette.
  • Astrid’s alternate is fantastic!  Her hair, when she isn’t wearing her cute hat, is fabulous, and I love that they put her character “somewhere on the spectrum”.  I loved loved loved alternate Astrid.
  • I disliked nearly all the other alternates.  Yep, I hated fauxlivia.  I am aware that I’m supposed to like her, at least eventually, but I could never forgive her even though the writers tried very hard to force me to find her charming and forgivable.
  • It offends me that everyone seems to like her “vivacity” and her tendency to “smile more” and her FUN personality.  She’s saucy and sexy and struts around all the time.  I hate that because I’m like the real Olivia – much more serious and broken and I’m not exactly a vivacious and FUN person.  I resent that these qualities are so admired and desired.
  • Walter’s obsession with food amused and delighted me through the whole series.
  • I never once liked or trusted Nina Sharpe.
  • I love Leonard Nimoy but his dentures are super uncomfortable for me to look at.
  • I’m pleased that the second time around Peter was much more cautious about getting together with Olivia lest he betray her again.  That almost made me forgive him for the first time when he fell for the FUN Fauxlivia.
  • I grew very impatient with all the time shifting.  Seriously, a little too damn much of that for me.  Gave me serious emotional whiplash.  I almost stopped watching.
  • Also – the period of time where Peter is “lost” and no one remembers him was way too long.  Like – stupidly long.  I almost gave up at that point too.  And I thought it was a little weak to suddenly reveal that he wasn’t lost at all.  WEAK.
  • If I was to be reborn as a man I want to be reborn as Seth Gabel who played Lincoln Lee.
  • I liked Lincoln Lee’s first pair of glasses way better than his second and every time I saw him in his Clark Kent’s I coveted them.  When my time comes to get glasses I want that kind.
  • I truly enjoyed the last season and am surprised that I did.  The only thing that marred it for me was the distance between Peter and Olivia.  While I get that drifting apart happens to grieving couples – the one thing those two should already have learned was to trust each other and to STICK TOGETHER IN HAPPINESS AS WELL AS GRIEF.  I kept wanting to scream at them “Kiss it out you fools!  You’re way stronger together than apart!  Have you learned nothing in the last four seasons?!”
  • I love September (played by Michael Cerveris) and loved what he became but was totally bummed that they killed him off AGAIN at the end.  Fuck that!
  • I thought the observers were incredibly interesting and I’m glad that they got explored a lot more.
  • I am so happy that both Olivias only had one child.  I’m so happy that the main Olivia revealed her mixed feelings about motherhood and her fitness for it and how she never planned to have any.  How often do shows do that?
  • I was a little disappointed to see that Peter and Olivia were wearing wedding rings in Season 5.  How cool would it have been if they had a child together and lived a committed life together without getting married.  Just goes to show how religion is still having undue influence over entertainment.  We can kill as many people off as we want but couples who have babies still must be seen to be married.  So stupid and narrow.
  • I’m sad that Astrid didn’t ever have a romantic partner.  For a while I hoped Lincoln Lee and her would get together.  But he had to be into Olivia.  (Philip says “does everybody have to be in love with Olivia?” yeah, apparently so)
  • But don’t get me wrong – I love Olivia too.
  • But if I was a man I’d probably fall for Astrid.
  • I would definitely NOT fall for Fauxlivia.
  • I did find the villain David Robert Jones a little tedious as well as Bell turning out to be the one completely behind his evil.  I think the villain who wants to destroy the world and start a new one in his image is getting pretty tired.  Why are humans so fascinated with this type of villain?  Is it because they really are afraid of the ultimate destruction of the universe?  I’m much more afraid of occupation and oppression than total annihilation.
  • The observers taking over seemed like a much more organic oppression.  The fact that they have settled in the past to protect their future makes sense to me.  They are keeping an order they understand and keeping control over the humans they see as inferior and obsolete and troublingly unpredictable.  If they did have anything akin to feelings I think they are like xenophobes who are terrified of what they don’t know or don’t understand.  The observers were a very interesting kind of adversary and I thought the writers made an old story (people from the future coming back into the past) into something new and interesting.
  • But seriously, way too much playing with timelines.  I did not find it confusing, I found it irritating.
  • I love that none of the women characters were running around chasing bad guys in stiletto heels.  Few things irritate me more than that.  Women in 6″ fucking heels running after villains.  No.  I think Olivia wore heels only once or twice in the show.  Otherwise she was always wearing boots or sensible shoes for saving the world in.
  • Joshua Jackson looks great in a pea coat.  He should always be wearing one.
  • John Noble has an incredible face.  His is my favorite “mad scientist” character of ALL TIME.  I love that his main pursuits are doing recreational drugs and eating.  I loved his vulnerability and his evolution from a man willing to do ruthless experimentation on children to a man horrified at his own ability to dehumanize others for the sake of science.  Of all the characters in this series his is the most complex, the most interesting, the most charming, and John Noble did an exquisite job bringing Walter to life.  Walter is the weirdest fictional character I’m bummed I can’t hang out with in real life.

That’s all I can think of right now.  I may come back and add a few thoughts.  I know I’m going to want to watch the series again.  I think I’m going to have to own it just so I can spend time in Walter’s lab some more and watch Peter looking at Olivia (because he does that so well) and watch Astrid play with lab stuff and look cute while holding trays of entrails.

I’m exhausted now.  I’m thinking about getting my hair cut.  I’m not sure.  I want to feel freshened up.  I feel emotionally wound up and a little wired.  This post was my first attempt to wind down.

Any thoughts you other Fringe lovers want to share with me?  I’d love to hear them!

The Intellectual Discussions About Television Shows You’ve Come to Expect of Me

I know that you come to me for in depth critical analysis’ of the television shows I’m watching and after hours of dedicated watching of new and returning shows I am ready to share with you my careful eval-

fuck it.

It’s all about the teeth, the noses, the romances, and other petty shit I love to obsess over.

So here are my quick and dirty thoughts on the shows I’m currently watching (in no preferential or particular order except how my mind throws them up for you):

***SPOILER ALERT***

Covert Affairs:

I have been fairly luke-warm about this show from the start.  I tend to turn to it when I don’t have anything else to watch.  At this moment I happen to be enjoying it more than usual.  I HATE the costuming for this show though.  Conservative and not flattering on the characters in my opinion.  That conservative look is not my thing.  I both like and dislike Auggie.  I just don’t believe in his blindness.  But I can’t say why.  So this season has interested me more than previously and I think it’s because of the Lena character who I love to hate and I really liked Simon.

Grimm:

Why are they torturing me?!  I’ve been without episodes for three weeks now and it’s driving me crazy.  I think this season is better than last season and my favorite thing is that Hank finally knows!!  I’m already tired of Juliette not remembering anything and I haven’t forgiven her for her reaction to Nick finally telling her the truth.  Hank is a way better partner to Nick than Juliette.  I admit I’m not a big Juliette fan.  My crush on Monroe continues to grow.  I’m LOVING his budding romance with Rosalee and I will be very upset if it gets crushed by jaded writers who can’t let any couples be happy.

Rookie Blue:

I think the season is over.  I HATE the way they left it hanging.  HATE it.  I’m really pissed at what’s-er-bucket for accepting the secret mission or whatever they’re calling it.  She totally fucked Sam over and I like Sam better than I like her.  Sam just pulled his head out of his ass and finally realized why he pushed Andy away and was all ready to make a fresh start.  She’s such a – grrr.  I want some good to come Dov’s way.  Let Gail suffer for a while – she’s been such a bitch from the beginning (to everyone).  I’m so so so horribly bummed about Jerry.

Castle:

YES!  FINALLY!  The first episode of the season was awesome.  I was going to stop watching the show if they didn’t bring Beckett and Castle together finally.  For real.  So, a note to the writers: you fuck up their relationship and continue to play games with me and I stop watching.  If you can’t write a show where the two leads are romantically involved but are still totally compelling – that’s an indication of your skills, not of what audiences will accept.  Remember Nick and Nora?  A few of my friends do not like the romantic angle of this show and don’t want these two to get together.  So I expect they aren’t enjoying the start of this season nearly as much as I am.

Bones:

I gave up on the show in season 6.  Season 7 redeemed itself for me.  The writers of Castle should take note!  I was worried about the baby angle since I am not interested in baby story lines at all but they’ve done it well and it hasn’t been annoying.  The murder solving part of the show is just as strong as ever – I’m still totally intrigued.  The first episode of the new season is a promising start.  Oh- but that wig Bones wears as disguise is HIDEOUS.

Revolution:

Apparently I’m a sucker for post apocalyptic shows.  I love the set on this one – I love the vision they’re creating – all that gardening and return to old timey living.  I was all set to enjoy this one until a friend pointed out how ridiculous a leather-clad militia is and how nearly the whole cast is also in leather.  I suppose one could argue that it’s easier to tan leather in a post apocalyptic world than to make other fabrics but once my friend mentioned this I can’t get past how silly it is.  Not sure how long I’ll watch this one.

The New Normal:

Quality of writing and acting is spotty – but this is fairly typical of new shows.  I am happy to see more gay couples being featured in sitcoms and I LOVE the Shania character who is clearly the true star of the show.  I want to see if this show picks up the pace in humor and storyline.

Saving Hope:

I love this show so far.  I was going to give up on it if the whole show is based on Charlie remaining forever in a coma.  The recent episodes have reassured me that it will not stagnate yet.  I can’t stand Maggie.  I think she’s amoral and fickle.  The only thing she cares about is herself.  I’m so bummed that Gavin is together with her – he was so much better off without her.  She’s totally going to use him up and throw him out.  I also can’t stand Joel.  I think Joel and Maggie deserved each other.  So who’s left to like?  I like all the other characters and I like the main storyline but am a little concerned that Alex is not going to believe Charlie when he tells her he can see dead people.  I’m concerned that this will break them up and then the ex-wife factor will become annoying rather than interesting.

Jericho:

I just started watching this on Netflix and am halfway through all the episodes.  Again – with the post apocalyptic theme!  I think the cast in this one is great.  The various secondary story-lines are interesting.  However, I love Hawkins and I am so stressed out by his story-line (is he good, is he bad?) that I think I have to stop watching this show.  Or go read all the spoilers.  I’m tired of him being suspected by everyone, rejected by his family, endlessly tangled up in a dangerous and mysterious intrigue that is starting to smell of smoke monster.  I am also disappointed that science girl Heather was sent away and Jake is now kissing dubious strangers while simultaneously pining for his old insipid flame.  I think that was a real missed opportunity – Heather was one of my favorite characters.  I do really like the Stanly/Mimi storyline but now Stanly is going away too.  Meanwhile I’m predicting that Dale and Skylar are going to become the new Bonnie and Clyde.  Best surprise of the show?  Dr. Dhuwalia.  Aasif Mandvi can act!  I love him on The Daily Show and I know he’s been in quite a few films/shows but this role really impressed me.

Guys With Kids:

Weak.  I love Jimmy Fallon who is the executive producer of this show but I think the writing is weak.  I’ve only seen the pilot so maybe it will improve.  I think the concept is good.  Dad’s with their kids is not brand new territory but a show based on the guy perspective of fatherhood and friendships is not widely explored.  Dialog and characters need much work.

Mob Doctor:

The premise is ridiculous.  Completely and outrageously unreal.  OR IS IT?  The mob is very real in this country and reaches into all kinds of crevices of life and business.  Why not through a doctor?  Here’s the thing, though, I can’t watch this show if the main character actually does harm to her patients on behalf of the mob.  Not even if she has to.  The tension of her position is good but how the writers play this out will decide whether I watch or not.  I do already like the main character and most of the supporting characters.  Also – I continue to love medical shows.

The Mindy Project:

Silly.  Kind of funny.  Not super funny.  Has some promise.  (If I squint my eyes.)  The only reason I even watched the pilot was because it had Bill Hader in it, one of my favorite cast members of SNL.

Ben and Kate:

I think this is a very promising show.  Where’s episode 2?  Is it already canceled?  Quirky characters without being annoyingly self conscious.  That was my first take on it.  I need to see another episode and I’m annoyed that I’ve been left hanging for a couple of weeks now.

The Promise:

I avoided this mini-series for weeks.  I’m not in a mood for heavy drama these days.  I finally watched because there were no other shows on to watch and though shocked by the real Holocaust footage in the first episode (wasn’t expecting that) the story is fascinating (makes me want to brush up on my Israeli/Palestinian 1940’s history), the characters are really strong and well played by a great cast.  Best of all is the footage of Israel.  It makes me glad I’ve been and it also makes me wish to go again.  I’m waiting for the last episode to come out and it is completely predictable that I’m pissed that Erin is so wishy washy that she’s hooked both Omar and Paul.  I want her to be with Omar.  Obviously.  If you’re watching this show too and you know me well then you would have guessed that.  The scene with the Jewish kids throwing rocks at the Muslim girls is hard to bear.  I hate the Meyer parents.  I love Erin’s Grandfather’s story and am totally on the edge of my seat to see what happens in the next episode.  I think I’m going to be depressed.  Normally this would be enough to make me not watch a show but there was so much richness here that it will be worth the inevitable low spirits I’ll experience following the end.  Oh, and all the cursing at human stupidity and evil.

There you have it.  What shows are you watching and what are your notes on them?

The Entertainment Line-up Right Now

The shows I’m watching right now:

  • Medium (almost finished with the whole series): I love this show.  I love Patricia Arquette.  I love her teeth, I love her acting, I love the character she plays, I love that she’s a regular medium sized female lead in a television series.  I also adore the Character Bridgette played by Maria Lark.
  • Ultimate Force (still on season 1): This is a damn bloody and violent show with mostly men and guns.  In spite of all the testosterone, the acting is really good.  I may not be able to stick with it though.  Not because of the gore.  I’m not even sure why.  It’s already been off the air for a few years but there are four seasons total.  I really love Tony Curran‘s nose.  It’s fierce.  Right, but I also think he’s a great actor.
  • Covert Affairs (just a few episodes): This one is already annoying me.  I find the blind agent Auggie to be smug and have failed to really enjoy the main character.  I am watching it because I miss MI5.  I also need to say that the first time I saw the actor Sendhil Ramamurthy (also in Ultimate Force) my first thought was that it was probably a curse to be a man and be that pretty.  He may be the most beautiful man alive and I can’t believe him in the roles he’s playing.
  • Castle:  It’s back.  I’ve seen the first episode of the new season and I’m pretty sure my irritation is only going to grow in this season.  I still love this show but it seems like one of the ones that will just string me along to the bitter fucking end where Castle and Beckett will never be able to get their shit together to be together and both of them are going to piss me off in the process.  The thing is, I can’t hate the characters, I blame the writers of the show.  This is a popular formula and I stop watching shows when they become tedious with their teasing and their “almost” hook ups.  So stupid.  Why can’t they be together and still be a team?  They can still annoy each other and bicker- no need to have one or the other.  Whether or not I continue watching “Bones” hinges on the same issue.
  • Rookie Blue:  I like this show.  Kinda.  I kinda don’t.  I can’t decide.  I think the main character, Andy McNally, is super stupid.  But the rest of them are pretty okay.  Mostly I’m just interested in the Dov character and I can’t stop looking at Gail just because she’s so striking.
  • Combat Hospital: This show is really compelling.  I love medical shows.  I really do.  I’m not even sure why.  The acting and the story lines in this show are fantastic.  It’s possible I’ll get tired of it by the next season, hard to say.  Right now I’m bummed it’s done.
  • Pan Am (Pilot): I watched the pilot episode and it’s not promising.  The main thing I was left with is the nagging need to know how Maggie started off with long bohemian style curly hair and in a half an hour cab ride to the airport ended up with a Funicello-style flip?  Did the cabby cut and style it for her?  Does this character wear a wig while she works and then lets her wild side down when she returns to her sty of an apartment?  I also dislike the blatant campy crap which dumbs down what could, maybe, turn out to be an interesting show.  I do like the costumes.  I’ll give it at least one more chance to impress but my brain will never let go of that hair thing.*

I interrupt this exciting television show list to ask “It’s 12 pm, do you know where your tuna is?” because my brain just shouted it in my head and I like to share.

It would apparently also like to suggest that “what’s good for the goose often isn’t good for anyone”.  (These bits of brain flotsam were pulled right out of the nonstop stream of dialog inside my head.)

  • Lie To Me: Such a fantastic show.  I have nothing else to say.  Except: Tim Roth!  Oh, wait, I do have something else to say.  The hair people who do Kelli Williams’ hair on the show are doing her a major disservice.  At least through the whole first season.  I think last season they wised up a little.
  • MI-5: Excellent show.  I’ve loved every season of it so far.  But how could I not like a show featuring Richard Armitage as a bad-ass spy?  As long as he doesn’t have a mullet, he’s golden.  But he’s not why I watch the show.  The whole cast is brilliant and it’s easy for me to invest myself in their future.  I do love spy shows like this one.
  • The Mentalist: I am afraid that Simon Baker gets cast as very similar characters in different shows.  Luckily I like the character type he plays.  But I like him better in the Mentalist than I did in the Guardian.  Absolutely love the supporting characters too, with special emphasis on the (sadly underused) Kimball Cho (Tim Kang).  Okay, maybe he’s not really underused but the focus has been more on Wayne and Grace and while they are good too, I like Cho the best.  His deadpan delivery is unmatched.
  • Downton Abbey: I can only see it online on PBS so it will be a while before I see the new season.  It is really engaging and well done.  The costumes are superb and I’m still hoping the show won’t go down the tragic route.
  • Bones: I was done watching this show last season but then I saw the last few episodes and now that Bones and Seely have finally gotten together and she’s apparently going to have his baby, I have to see if they’re going to actually work it out.  If they decide to have it but not be together, I’m not going to keep watching.  My needs are simple and they’re classic and they’re very boring.  I always want the girl to get the boy.  Or the boy to get the boy.  Or the girl to get the girl.  Whatever, I want the couple I’m rooting for to get together and if I get strung along and teased for too many seasons, I abandon ship.  So this show is on probation.

That’s my lineup for right now.  I have entered into a complete book lull.  At this time in my life I don’t want a show or a book to turn my world upside down or inside out.  I’m not an intellectual (as is obvious to most people) and I don’t have lofty or major expectations from my entertainment.  I want interesting stories with happy endings.  I want the couple to get together and work things out. I want the killer to be caught.  I want the broken people healed.

I just want it to be well done.

I finally finished the boring book I was reading.  It met all my criteria for entertainment except for that last one.  It was not well done, it was not well written, and it was not engaging.  I need to find some new books to read but I don’t want to be disappointed.

There you have it.  I just needed to share my thoughts on all those shows because I largely watch them alone (a couple of them I watch with my mom) and I want to put my comments somewhere.  Now you can read them and agree or disagree.  And please feel free to tell me what you’re watching right now- I’m totally interested to know!

*Not the show’s fault my brain is obsessive to a clinical level.
