List 5 Personal Hygiene Products You Can’t Live Without in a Post Apocalyptic Situation

5 Personal Hygiene Products I Can’t Live Without in a Post Apocalyptic Situation:

1.  Dental Floss

2.  Toothbrush

3.  Q-tips

4.  Nail Clippers (the kind with the lousy emery board attached)

5.  Toothpaste

I use lotion every single day of my life several times a day but I figure I can make my own substitutes for this .  Ditto lip balm, soap, shampoo, and deodorant.  But I can’t stand to have baking soda in my mouth and I can’t make my own toothpaste.  There’s no way I can make my own dental floss or fashion a pair of nail clippers.  And nothing can clean ears better than Q-tips.

I will have to stockpile these items.

Your turn.  What 5 items of personal hygiene couldn’t you live without in a post apocalyptic situation?

Good list! But: how would you apply the toothpaste without a tooth brush? I thought about tweezers too – struggled with that one. In a post apocalyptic situation I think tweezers would have quite a few handy applications aside from nicely tamed brows.

Assuming I’m still premenopausal when the apocalypse comes, I’d switch out tampons for nail clippers…otherwise, everything else on your list is perfect.

    1. Diva Cup (I haven’t spent money on tampons or pads for 5 years – and none in the landfills or sewer system, either…would be perfect for avoiding post-apocalyptic runs on the drug stores and grocery stores.)

    2. Nail clippers with built-in file

    3. Q-Tips

    4. Washcloth

    5. Toothbrush. As long as I could boil myself clean water, I’d do okay with just the brush & no paste.

I have never tried a diva cup. I always found tampons really uncomfortable (I’ve tried many different kinds) so I am not keen on the idea of any interior contraption for feminine hygiene. However – I do think it would be difficult to keep oneself in tampons during an apocalypse. What I plan to do, in this hypothetical situation, is to sew up re-usable cloth pads. I’ve kind of been meaning to do this anyway but I keep hoping I’ll just stop getting my period – like soon.

Good point about the hot water boiling thing. The toothbrush is key for getting all that ick out – but I am really attached to minty freshness. That would be so hard to let go of. And I did struggle over the washcloth thing. Washcloths are awesome!

    1. Toothbrush
    2. Toothpaste (same reason – can’t stand baking soda in my mouth!)
    3. tampons or a Diva cup (I also don’t like cloth pads. evidently I am picky)
    4. deodorant (unless everyone else is going without, or there’s some amazing natural substance out there I haven’t tried yet – in which case we’ll all be smelly together.)
    5. Nail clippers

I want floss, but not as much as I want deodorant. I’d probably just embrace being hairy in a post-apocalyptic situation. Although, after having pneumonia this past weekend, I hope no post-apocalyptic situations occur anytime soon, as I’m rather attached to my z-pack and steroids. Haha.

Oh man – medications are such a problem in a post apocalyptic world (that’s a core theme of my book) and I’d be lost without my psyche meds! I can’t stand the feeling of unflossed teeth after about a week – I also can’t stand being stinky but I’m hoping I can fashion some soap and washcloths and figure I’ll just have to wash my armpits more than once a day to keep from stinking. Isn’t it funny to think about what you can and can’t live without?

I would use the apocalypse as an excuse to stop flossing, probably. (I’m not saying it’s right, or smart, I’m just predicting my own behavior based on past experience.)

    1. Lip balm, because I am too ignorant to make my own. Lucky for me, my current stash will probably last the rest of my life even without post-apocalyptic conditions shortening it.
    2. Tweezers. For self-esteem and also first aid.

Actually I think that’s it. I’d probably just cut my hair off so I wouldn’t need to do much to take care of it.

    Baking Soda
    Apple cider Vinegar
Aloe Vera or Vaseline or some kind of oil
    lemon
    Hydrogen peroxide

Baking soda can be used as a scrub to exfoliate and also clean your body. You can also add it to your shampoo or just use it as shampoo and you can also brush oily roots with it dry. You can also brush your teeth with it. You can also do most of the cleaning in your house with it. Oh and obviously you can bake with it.

Apple cider vinegar is best. You can use vinegar as conditioner. You can use it as a toner. You can use it in your mouth. And it’s the other main component for cleaning. You can also cook with it for overall general health.

Aloe Vera, Vaseline, and oils are all very hydrating and healing and versatile and cheap. An Aloe Vera plant is best. It can heal sunburns, prevent razor burn, moisturize, and use the juice as an alternative to water for waterless washing. You can also drink it for overall health. You may have to mix it with something less drying though. Vaseline is just for moisturizing, healing, and versatile, and cheap. Baby oil is the same way. If you use coconut or olive oil, you can moisturize hair and skin. You can oil pull. You can also cook with it and take it for overall health

Lemon can be used to cleanse, exfoliate, lighten and brighten hair and skin. It can also be used to cook and for general health and for cleaning.

Hydrogen peroxide can be used for killing bacteria on body and just for general cleaning, getting rid of dandruff, getting rid of earwax, and on teeth
